- Amy (26th May 2023 11:19:22)
I've looked on the council and it says nothing about busking. Please help!

Hello Amy
No you do not need a licence to busk.
However you should observe the following
Don't obstruct the pavement
Don't display a sign asking for money
Don''t be too loud ( probably personal opinion )
Obviously don't pitch up on private ground ~ Sainsbury's for example.
Be smiley and polite
In the day, one could make more money in half an hour at Oxford Street Underground than a hard days work.
Good luck

Apparently a Saturday in Chichester can produce upwards of £200 (If you are any good at what you do.

Within the caveats mentioned in the earlier post, you do not need a license to busk. On private property (eg London Underground) the owners (TFL, etc.) can grant permits to busk.
However, to beg on the street a license is required, as it is illegal (as far as I know) to beg on the street without a 'license to beg'. All the registered 'Big Issue' sellers display such a license.

Busking isn't begging

Some enterprising buskers even have a contactless payment device, although i have to say i think that's a bit sad.

AF - seeing as many people no longer carry cash contactless devices are a must. It's not sad, it's simply very good business sense opening a new channel in which to get paid.

If your running a business providing a service even just for tips I think you need to register with Inland Revenue as self employed, if it's anything like my business you'll need a Health and Safety Survey to ensure noone has a trip or fall over your equipment, that no-ones ears get hurt, that everyone knows where to meet if your guitar explodes and there is no asbestos in the paint, you'll need a million pounds public liability cover, a carbon performance certificate and a race awareness policy, you'll need to show that you support gender fluidity and that your playlist incorporates every possible cultural taste, having said that there probably won't be much tax if any to pay unless as an earlier poster said you can earn in an hour what a hard working professional earns in a week, blimey I may even try it myself, anyone got a banjo, it sounds like a simpler and more profitable life:)
