Hello Jenny
I suggest you Google RHS Bay Trees, and once on the RHS site, follow the link to 'Problems' and then to Brown Leaves ~ your answer will be there.
Good Luck

Exactly the same as ours we’ve had it for 7 years no problems until this year. The only thing I’ve seen on Google is to re pot it. We’re going to try that!

Yes ours too. We have two bay trees, several years old, both gone brown/died this year. Ours are in pots and I fear this year a late frost may have killed them. Sorry I can't help but you aren't alone.

If you could be bothered to look at the RHS site, you would learn that Bay Trees with brown leaves is environmental, such as watering, drainage and shelter.

A key point is to establish whether the Bay Tree has died. Usually, if you scratch away a bit of the bark you will see the green cambium layer underneath.
The Cambium is the layer of cells which multiplies and forms the new growth each Spring. If this is brown, not green, the tree, or that part of the tree is dead.
Check this first to see if it is worth trying remedies and suggestions made on this post.
Best wishes, we come to love our trees and shrubs.
Mike

If your bay is precious for you, the above advice may be helpful, but your bay's own predicament could be more intricate. Remediating the damage may require more nuanced and thorough approach.
DHC is available to help as per the entry on the Online Directory of this website.
