Eggs

Not one egg to be had in Sainsburys. They tell me that's because of bird flu and all the chickens have been put down!!! What a load of nonsense. Farmers have plenty of eggs, but the supermarkets will not pay them the higher price they need to cover their costs.
Thank goodness for the Co-op

48 Million Chickens have been culled since this latest outbreak of Avian Virus ~ Get over yourself and eat something else, preferably not derived fro animals. Check it on the Government website.
And don't expect dead turkey for Christmas.

PR- you seem to be quoting figures from the US where there have indeed been 49 million poultry birds culled so far. However, here in the UK as of September, 2.8 million poultry and captive birds have been culled due to the latest strain of avian influenza. There are around 39 million commercial laying hens in the UK, so still plenty of eggs to go around.

Turkey growers have been licensed to kill and freeze early this year to avoid the worry of shortages. They may well be slightly smaller than last year, but you can expect to have turkey on your table this year.

Why don’t you buy your eggs from the day centre very good farm eggs . It help’s to keep the day centre going. Tuesday morning’s.

Hi,
At £1.30 for half-dozen of fresh free-range eggs is a good deal from the Day Centre. Sainsburys charge £1.60 for the same.
It is clucking obvious!

In listening to the farming programmes on the radio.
It seems that many farmers are not being paid enough, by the big supermarkets, to cover the costs of production. At the moment, about 30p a dozen is being lost by the refusal of supermarkets to pay a realistic price to farmers. [Any recent price rises in the big shops is mainly due to these firms increasing their own margins, rather than paying the producers.] The effect of this is to stop so many eggs being produced, as older, less productive, birds are not being replaced by younger laying hens. Hence fewer eggs on shelves in the big supermarket chains.
