Signposting Roadworks
- Paul Robinson (13th Oct 2022  07:58:55)

Recently, the village has seen a number of necessary roadworks on most of the major traffic routes.

Unfortunately the large warning signs are still littering the pavements even though the work has been completed several weeks ago.

I am aware that the signage is supplied and erected by a separate agency, not necessarily connected to the company charged with the 'hole diggery'.

The continued presence of conflicting messages, some recommending diversions no longer relevant, is bound to confuse motorists.

Some of these signs and cones have been moved by pedestrians and tucked away behind post boxes, telephone boxes, salt bins, telegraph poles and BT 'Green Boxes''.

Something must be done to clear these signs away.

Quite agree Paul!
Leaving ‘Road Closed’, ‘Diversion’ etc signs scattered around the place is not helpful for people passing through who aren’t from around here.
Any idea who the signage putter-upperers are?
Let’s gather them all up and put them in a handy pile for collection???

Hewshott Lane was shut today so the signs diverting people London Road, The Square and Haslemere Road were real! As for the others, anybody's guess!

Hi Paul, that’s uncanny as I was only thinking this myself today. There’s a proliferation of these in the village and most frustrating they’re not collected after the work is completed. I think it can be reported via the council website. I’m going to check.

Nine times out of ten when one sees these "Road Closed" signs up, it turns out that the road is not actually closed at all and the signs have just been left there after the works were completed.

It's no wonder that so many drivers, myself included, just ignore the signs and drive past them, chancing their luck that the road will in fact be open. On the vast majority of occasions, it is!

Understandable Jen, but worth noting 'road closed' signs you can't drive through to the same degree as no entry although 'road ahead closed' signs you can, it's a bit more nuanced than that but that's a good guide. That's why these signs should be taken down when the work is finished as if they linger they diminish the public's faith in the signs.
