Cost of living very high and getting higher!
- MR PAUL EARWICKER (16th Feb 2022  13:51:52)

Hi,
Is there a way the Liphook website can come together with residents of our village, and bulk-buy food items to lower costs to help individuals and families?

I know there are food banks, but not everyone qualifies to use them.

After putting up with 2 years of Covid-19, now we have to be able to live in our country, and survive. For the future is a challenge, not many of younger years have ever seen.

Sounds great.

Put me down for 5 cases of foie gras please.

On a similar subject is there anyone who can help me please who has recently had solar panels installed, and can give pointers on where to obtain impartial advice which is not too technical to understand?

Re: Cost of living very high and getting higher!
- ian (17th Feb 2022  09:38:19)

Solar panels a good idea as long as you have 25 years ahead of you to recover the initial outlay before you get back into credit. As with so many "green initiatives" meaningful benefits will cost an arm and a leg and must be viewed as an investment for future generations rather than the here and now. Personally I wouldn't bother, there are far more important everyday issues that need investment of funds like combating racism, sexism, inequality and lack of amenities for disabilities etc

Paul you are right the young people of today seem not to No how to make ends meet.

Sorry to sound an old foggy but you can do a lot for yourself to put food on the table. A huge amount is spent on unnecessary items. And food can be bought very cheaply if you are on a budget sell-by date food going cheap ect.

Unfortunately the younger generation cannot do without all the modern paraphernalia which costs a fortune. We have all been here before having to take two or three jobs to make ends meet and today there are plenty of jobs so it’s a lot easier.

You know I tell my grandchildren there are 24 hours in a day if you work 8 hours you still have 16 hours to play with; 8 hours sleep your left with 8 hours to do more work if you want to get on in life.

Look on the bright side, Paul. At least the interest on your mortgage isn't in double figures like it was thirty years ago. Base rate below one percent? Unbelievable.

Hi,
Good post OAP, you know how to lead a life!

OAP, I bet your grandkids love visiting you ;-)

Quite right D 15% back in the 70s . Paul & Ian2 My grandchildren are all grown up and have done extremely well two to universities and they visit a lot and say Granddad you were right work hard brings results.

I know the old saying all work and no play makes jack a dull boy but when need’s must you have to put your nose to the grind stone and you will benefit from your efforts. Lots of old saying that some of you might not have heard but are very true.

We are going into a funny old time but if you look at history you will see we have been there before and come out the other side I hope for everyone’s sake we prosper and move on .

D and Paul, a quick maths test for both of you:

Would you rather have 15% of £4000 or 3% of £275000?

As a fraction, which is bigger 1200/4000 or 26000/275000?

Please show all workings.

As recently as the mid-1990s, average house prices in the UK were four times average salaries. Average UK house prices are now ten times average salaries and, in the South East, that goes up to roughly fifteen times.

People with mortgages in the 1980s also benefited from mortgage interest relief at source (MIRAS), a tax break which was a real bonus.

Average buyer deposits, required by mortgage providers, are also now proportionately higher.

Housing stock has not kept up with population growth. Extended life expectancy has also slowed the turnover of houses for sale (I'm not bemoaning extended life, by the way!)

This is the reason young people can't buy a house, not because they bought a gadget. They can do three jobs, like OAP and still not have a hope of buying somewhere.

Maths teacher, I'm not sure where the figure of £4,000 comes from so I've based my answer on the £60,000 mortgage I was paying off thirty years ago:-

£275,000 @ 3% = £8,250

£60,000 @ 15% = £9,000

Oh look, 15% IS more than 3%. The really disturbing thing is that a mathematics teacher wanted to see workings for this.

Hi,
The cost of living is spiralling out of control for most people.
Yes housing values go up and up, and current and future generations will not afford their own house...madness in an intelligent country, or just greed?

In fact countries like Germany Switzerland and Denmark have lower home ownership than the UK.

There are lots of countries with higher home ownership - some surprising ones !

The government (Rupert Murdoch / Russian's) feed you what they want you to believe and you respond according to how they already predicted then later enforce their control by voting for their patsies (Boris/Selfservatives)

Some of us complain about how it affects us but we are presented with alternatives to the situation that suggest all ill's of the evil red communism and we retract from that as we have been fed Hollywood all our life's.

We are suspended in this reality forever more bouncing off a bulls**t echo of each other whilst someone else runs away laughing with a pocket full of cash laughing at how both easy it was and how stupid the rest of us are.

Everyone is being played and against each other, for when you make it about each other other a revolution simply cant happen.
